Knowing what to expect in social situations can make you (and everyone else) a lot more comfortable. Here’s why.

PREPARING TO READ

Before you read the article “A User’s Guide to Manners,” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

READING AND DISCUSSION

  • Have your students read the article “A User’s Guide to Manners” independently; read the article out loud to them; or have students partner-read the article out loud.
  • After they’ve read the article, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed?

Continue the learning journey with the following extension activity:

In WHAT NOT TO DO, have students plan and deliver one- to two-minute skits inspired by different scenarios from the article. In the first part of the skit, they should show the class what not to do in their chosen scenario. Have them end their skits by eliciting group feedback as to how manners could have been used to help the situation. If you’d like, have a student volunteer keep track of the group’s learning, using a “do’s and don’ts” chart on the board.
