Continue the learning journey with the following extension activity:
After students finish reading “I’m an Electrician,” give them the opportunity to learn more about CAREERS WITH APPRENTICESHIPS. In this self-directed web search activity, they’ll find out what apprenticeships are, which occupations may require them, and what those occupations are like. First, have students visit the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website (https://www.bls.gov/). Once there, they should type “What are apprenticeships?” into the search bar and choose the first article from the list of results. (You can also post the article, linked here, directly to any learning platform of your choice.) Students should use this resource and the questions from the skill sheet to learn about different jobs with apprenticeships. When students have completed the activity, allow them to share what they learned in a whole-class or small-group format.
