Dressing up like a spooky spirit for Halloween can’t hurt anyone. But what about ghosting someone on social media?

PEPARING TO READ

Before you read the debate “Is It Ever OK to Ghost?” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

READING AND DISCUSSING

  •  Have your students read the debate “Is It Ever OK to Ghost?” independently; read the article out loud to them; or have one student read one side of the debate and another student read the other side.
  • After they’ve read the debate, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed? Remind them to vote in the poll at the end of the story.

Continue the learning journey with the following writing prompt:

In TO GHOST OR NOT TO GHOST?, have your students write a one- to three-page opinion essay responding to the debate question. They should start with a short introduction on ghosting and state whether or not they believe it is OK to ghost someone on social media in order to end a relationship. If they answered “no” to the debate question, they might support their position by describing a time someone ghosted them or someone they know, and say how it felt to be ignored with no explanation. If they answered “yes,” they could describe a time they or someone they know felt it was OK to ghost someone, and give reasons to justify cutting off communication to end that relationship. Next, they should recognize the opposing side in the debate and explain why they still believe their opinion is correct. Remind them to write a conclusion recapping their ideas in a creative and memorable way!
